The Danji SS Campaign Council expresses deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity in our institutions, especially around Taraba State College of Nursing and Midwifery where reportedly students were raped, beaten and have their phones stolen. We have received disturbing reports of persistent burglary, theft, phone snatching, invasion of students' off-campus apartments, and attacks with knives and cutlasses around the university and college communities. The situation reached a breaking point this week. Just last week, armed men wielding machetes and cutlasses invaded the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences hostel, injured students and carted away many mobile phones. Now, another tragic incident has been reported at the Sambisa Forest Hostel, where a female student was allegedly raped, beaten and robbed of her phone after attackers forced her to reveal her password. As a result, students have taken to the streets today to protest. Why should a government who pride security as it scorecard allow more attacks before taking decisive action? Students have complained that whenever they raise security concerns, their cries are treated as if they do not matter. We call on the Taraba State Government, Security Agencies, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Tertiary Education and the management of the affected institutions to intervene immediately, secure both on-campus hostels and off-campus student residential areas, investigate these allegations thoroughly and ensure justice for every victim. Furthermore, we strongly urge the authorities and security agencies to handle the ongoing student protest with utmost care, restraint and professionalism. These students are not criminals, they are victims crying out for safety after enduring trauma. Their constitutional right to peaceful protest must be fully respected, and any form of harassment, intimidation or use of force against them must be avoided while their legitimate grievances are being addressed. Students went to school to become nurses, teachers and graduates, not to become victims of rape, robbery and assault. Security of our students is not negotiable.
